The following are tips the buyer can perform while checking a used car before taking the car to a mechanic Before starting:

  1. Remove radiator cap and smell the cap for oil, if oil smell is present, could be an oil leak
  2. Check for bubbles on the radiator cap
  3. Check the oil dip stick for discolorization, if dip stick is new or recently replaced, the seller could be hiding a problem.
Starting up:
  1. Have seller start up vehicle while the buyer is standing behind and looking at the exhaust pipe, check for the smoke color and density, if black or green, could be a problem. If density of smoke is thick, car has been sitting.
  2. Check for water coming from exhaust pipe
